Spravato® Q & A

What is Spravato?

Spravato contains esketamine, a medication specifically designed to treat certain types of depression. Administered as a nasal spray, Spravato's rapid absorption by the nasal tissues allows it to enter the bloodstream and reach the brain quickly, helping to balance the brain chemicals responsible for regulating mood.

Who can take Spravato?

Spravato has been approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for patients who meet the following criteria:

Treatment-Resistant Depression (TRD)

If you have tried two or more antidepressant medications without experiencing symptom improvement, you may have TRD. It’s essential to have given each medication enough time to take effect at the proper dose.

Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) with Suicidal Thoughts or Behaviors

If you experience symptoms such as persistent feelings of sadness, hopelessness, worthlessness, loss of interest in activities, changes in appetite and sleep patterns, irritability, and recurrent thoughts of harming or killing yourself, you may have MDD with suicidal ideation, which makes you eligible for Spravato treatment.

How do I get Spravato?

The first step is to schedule an appointment at WellMind Behavioral Health & Wellness. During the assessment, your provider will discuss your previous depression treatments. They may first prescribe regular antidepressants before considering Spravato as an adjunctive therapy.

Most individuals can safely receive Spravato treatment, but certain blood vessel conditions or allergies to esketamine may disqualify you from being a suitable candidate.

What happens during Spravato treatment?

Spravato is administered in the WellMind Behavioral Health & Wellness office, and you will relax under close monitoring for about two hours. During this time, the team will observe for potential side effects, which may include sleepiness, dizziness, anxiety, nausea, and changes in blood pressure. It is also possible to experience dissociation, where you may feel disconnected from your feelings and thoughts or experience a sense of detachment from time.

After the treatment, you’ll need to have someone drive you home, and it's recommended to take the rest of the day to relax and avoid mentally demanding activities until the next day.

WellMind Behavioral Health & Wellness is dedicated to providing the best mental health care, and Spravato is just one of the innovative treatments offered to help you find relief from depression.
